Canterbury houses some of the top ranking universities, besides numerous other specialist education providers. Let’s take a look at these institutions and the courses they offer:
University of Canterbury: Founded by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge Universities in 1873, the University of Canterbury in Christchurch is the second oldest university in New Zealand. Holding an international reputation for academic excellence in both teaching and research, the university will give you an excellent educational foundation that you will be able to turn into an amazing career. The University of Canterbury is ranked among the top 250 in 2017 QS World University Rankings. Its civil and structural engineering programme is rated 51st in the world, and it has another seven subjects in the top 150. The main areas of study imparted by the University of Canterbury are Arts, Commerce, Education (physical education), Engineering, Fine Arts, Forestry, Health Sciences, Law, Music, Social Work, Speech and Language Pathology, Science, Sports Coaching and Teaching.
Lincoln University: Lincoln is one of the major universities in Canterbury. Founded in 1878, it is also one of the eight government universities in New Zealand and home to diverse group of students from across the globe. Over the century, the university offers a unique experience, a perfect balance of student and academic life and a host of recreation activities around the region. It’s ranked the 12th best small university in the world by QS World University rankings 2017-18. The job employment rate for Lincoln students is higher than other universities in NZ, as it has good connections to industries, government and research organizations which give its students amazing opportunities to learn grow and make a career. There are three main faculties from which students can choose a wide range of courses to pursue. They are the Faculty of Agribusiness and Commerce; the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences; the Faculty of Environment, Society and Design. UC International College: UC International College (UCIC) is a collaboration between Navitas Limited and the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and is located on the campus of University of Canterbury. UCIC is one of New Zealand’s premier institutions which provides its international students with access to world class teaching facilities which are in the University of Canterbury. UCIC offers three intakes per year, one in March, second in June and third in December. UCIC’s University Transfer Programmes (UTP) are available in 3 streams; Engineering, Commerce and Science with a large range of available specialisations in each stream.
Apart from these universities, there are a number of accredited Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and Private Training Establishments (PTEs) which impart high quality education for you to build your career and gain necessary skills for the future. Some of the ITPs in Canterbury include Ara Institute of Canterbury and Southern Institute of Technology. To pursue higher studies in these universities, ITPs and PTEs having a course duration of more than three months, you will need a New Zealand Student Visa.
